It's the annual traditional visit of longtime friends of the podcast, Andrew Shaw and Dan Pua! This year they are wrapping up the best of summer, except apparently it isn't summer in Australia. But that doesn't stop them from discussing the best books and movies and cakes of the past 3 months! Wendi has had the "summer of bears" and more drama at the 2 banana job, Andrew's comic "Cul de Sac" is finally on Comixology, and Dan takes more pictures of his kitties. Apologies for the less than perfect audio, thank you for sticking with us!

Karl Slominski is a real go getter- an ambitious artist who works in bright, psychedelic angles and colors, he has no hesitation in telling you what he wants and hopes to achieve. His art style is a refreshing mix of splashy paint and inky linework, best seen in the graphic novel, "Teeter Topple" which he also wrote- a twisty mental tale of a young man's breakdown. He is starting a new imprint called "New Noise" which will feature work from him, and his partner, screenwriter Jenna Lyn Wright. We talk about the balance of their relationship, their "meet cute", his new books "Alternauts" and "Cult of Ikarus", and things you can do with the Fantastic Four.

Artist Zach Lehner is the special guest this week as he celebrates the release of vol. 2 of "Junior Braves of the Apocalypse" from One Press, written by Greg Smith and Michael Tanner. Creating a horror comic for young adults is a delicate balance of pushing the edge of fear and violence. He discusses the inevitable "Walking Dead" comparisons and how it differs from "Lord of the Flies" or any other "teens in danger" tropes, and reaching out to libraries.

Then a quick chat with Luke Foster, who draws a funny ghost cartoon.

Everything about artist/writer Michel Fiffe is crafted from a place of reverence, sincerity and respect. His long running indie comic, Copra, is a love letter to the 80s run of "Suicide Squad" and his work with Image Comics reimagining Rob Liefeld's "Bloodstrike" is not tongue in cheek in the slightest. Fiffe wears his influences well but shapes them through his unique independent lens. He and Wendi discuss these as well as the underrated impact of Kim Yale on women in comics, and a fascinating discussion of his correspondence with Steve Ditko and differentiating hating "fandom" but loving your fans.

audio note: there is an echo on Wendi's dialogue, hopefully you can bear through it for this great conversation.

In this corner, we have the spectacular J. Gonzo, artist and writer of "La Mano Del Destino", a comic set in a fictional 1960's Mexico about a supernatural luchador bent on revenge. He discusses all the thought and detail presented in the color and printing of this retro story, along with the history of Mexican wrestling, the importance of masks to identity, why we can't see the El Santo movies anymore, masculinity and machismo in Latino culture, and who gets to use Batman's weight room.

Check out "La Mano Del Destino" at www.castleandkeypublications.com

The second half of the episode is devoted to Martin Casaus, better known as "Marty the Moth" on the El Rey Network's popular show, "Lucha Underground". He talks about crafting his maniacal character, what makes "Lucha Underground" so much more plot driven than other wrestling shows, why wrestlers are such savvy vloggers, his injuries on WWE's "Tough Enough" encouraging people's fitness journeys and much more.

"Rock Candy Mountain" is a hilarious and action packed comic detailing the adventures of hobos, and talking to writer/artist Kyle Starks and colorist Chris Schweizer is equally fast paced. It's a delirious book packed with colorful characters that's part historical, part supernatural and always ridiculous. They break down the false stereotypes of hobos, the code they live by, parody vs. satire, how to pick your hobo name, wuxia kung fu movies, the closing of Toys R Us and so much more.

Writer Erica Schultz is an exceptionally cool woman with a deep knowledge of true crime, cults and serial killers. She came into comics working at Neal Adams' studio where she honed her skills at lettering, inking, writing and editing, was accepted into the DC Comics writers' workshop where she got to write a Hawkgirl story, has written part of Dynamite's "Swords of Sorrow" crossover, and comics based on the tv shows "Revenge" and "Charmed". Coming up she has her own crime comic "12 Devils Dancing" from Action Lab, as well as a "Daredevil" annual and a run on "Xena: Warrior Princess". She and Wendi talk about pleasing long time fans of these properties, ghost stories, kitties, women interest in true crime, and a lot more!

Sybil Danning is a goddess of 80s action film cinema. Statuesque and vivacious, she featured in such films as "Howling 2", "Battle Beyond the Stars", "Chained Heat" and "Reform School Girls". Wendi and guest host Brian Kirst of "Big Gay Horror Fan" have a fantastic time listening to her tell Hollywood stories about working with people like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Clint Eastwood, wrangling Klaus Kinski, the behind the scenes work of producing your own films, writing her new comic book "Ruger", and being a feminist icon. Back in the days of "Wizard" magazine, Wendi once won a competition to write an essay about her favorite comic, "Strangers in Paradise". Now she fulfills her teenage dream of talking to Terry Moore about the return of his self published sensation, where Katchoo and Francine are at this stage of their lives, how it fits in with the larger "Terryverse" with "Rachel Rising", what women helped shape his views and more.

Then she talks extensively with Caleb Alexander-Mckinzie of the "Southern Fried Geekery" podcast about their experiences at C2E2. Prepare for a silly and NSFW episode as Wendi chats with very dear friend and return guest, writer Andrew Shaw. In addition to dirty sounding perfume descriptions, the inappropriateness of a horse at comic convention, talk of Michael Rooker, wrestler Joey Ryan, 70s porn and how Wendi almost got fired over suspicious banana behavior, they get down to the serious business of Andrew's new book "Cul De Sac". Billed as "An Australian Horror Story" it combines the exceptional painting of Will Pleydon against a backdrop of the idyllic 50s in an unsettling anthology. If you're a fan of the bawdy "No Apologies" crossover episodes, this is a must listen.
